There are several effective squirrel-proof bird feeder designs we recommend. A squirrel-proof bird feeder might have a protective cage, be
a weight-activated feeder or be an electronic birdfeeder. All of these bird feeder types will protect bird seed from a squirrel and allow
ample access to the feeder for the birds.
A cage-type squirrel-proof bird feeder is are made such that openings are large enough to let a bird pass through, but small enough to keep a squirrel out. The squirrel-proof bird feeder
cage comes in several sizes and typically encloses a tube feeder.
A squirrel-proof bird feeder with a spring works by using the weight of a squirrels’ body to activate a trap door device to block access to seed. Since a bird weighs less than a squirrel, birds do not activate the weight sensitive levers and they can readily access the birdfeeder.
The most popular electric feeder is the Yankee Flipper squirrel proof birdfeeder - it uses a rechargeable battery to spin a weight-activated motor. The Wild Bill’s electronic bird feeder, the one we use in the
Nature Cam at Shop-NC, uses a charge from a 9-volt battery and capacitor to harmlessly zap squirrels, leaving birds at the feeder unfazed. Either
one of these “high-tech” squirrel-proof bird feeder solutions is effective … and highly entertaining.
