Brown Thrashers are very similar to thrushes but larger with longer
tails and streaked rather than spotted below. They are very shy and
secretive, unlike their cousins the Mockingbird. Often ground feeders,
they can be seen scattering dead leaves with their beaks in search of
insects. In recent years they have become scarce throughout most of
their range.
Brown Thrashers breed from southeastern Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and
northern New England south to the Gulf Coast and Florida. They winter
in the southern part of their breeding range.
