The brilliantly colored male Scarlet Tanager spends most of its time
high up in the tree canopy or in thick foliage and is often difficult to
see. In breeding plumage, the male is brilliant scarlet with black
wings. In non breeding plumage, both the female and the male are olive
green but the male has black wings.
The Scarlet Tanagers habitat is mainly mature woodlands of oak and
pine. It breeds from extreme southeastern Canada to the east-central
United States and winters in the tropics.
