The Northern Cardinal is named after the robes worn by Roman Catholic
cardinals. They are aggressive birds and occupy territories
year-round. Both the males and females sing year-round unlike most
songbirds that sing only in the spring. Cardinals eat mostly seeds
however they do eat insects during breeding season. Cardinals are
frequent visitors to feeders.
They are residents of the eastern United States and southern Canada south
to the Gulf Coast and from southern California, Arizona, and southern
Texas. Their habitat is mainly open coniferous forests.
