The American Goldfinch is also called the "Wild Canary" and
is a familiar and common species. These birds do not begin nesting
until mid to late summer when weed seeds are available. Since they
nest so late, only a single brood is raised each year. They gather in
large flocks in winter with other finches such as redpolls and Pine Siskins.
Their habitat consist of brushy thickets, weedy grasslands, and
trees. They breed from southern British Columbia east to Newfoundland,
and south to California, Utah, southern Colorado, central Oklahoma,
Arkansas, and the Carolinas. They winter in much of the United States.
