Indigo Buntings are actually black with no blue
pigment. The diffraction of light through the structure of the
feathers makes them appear a brilliant turquoise blue. The beautiful
birds are often found where woodlands meet open areas and rural roadside
thickets. They consume many insects pests and weed seeds and are very
beneficial to farmers.
They breed from southeastern Saskatchewan east to New Brunswick
and south to central Arizona, central Texas, the Gulf Coast and northern
Florida. They winter in southern Florida and the tropics.
