Blue Jays are considered "tree planters" because they often
bury seeds and acorns and many are never retrieved. They will mob
predators and their loud calls identify hawks and roosting owls. They
are sometimes disliked at feeders because they will chase away smaller
birds. However this handsome bird is a pleasure to observe. Blue Jays
are migratory and travel in large flocks in spring and fall. In the
East, birds from the north will replace the population in the winter.
Blue Jays prefer oak forest but can be seen in city parks and suburban
yards. They breed east of the Rockies, from southern Canada to the
Gulf of Mexico.
